Rainbow Bridge Poem

I knew I always liked dogs, but it wasn't until I was 35 years old that I had my own. Not long after that we had two and needless to say our lives were greatly enriched. When one of them was 11 years old he was stricken with bone cancer. When the day came to put him to sleep, it was the worst few hours of my life to date. Specifically the ride to the Vet, my poor Dally was so happy to be out as he had become pretty ill. As I kept thinking this would be my last few minutes with him I could barely breathe. He passed with his head in my hands looking right into my eyes. I was thankful for how fast & painless it was.
As this was my first pet loss, I was taken aback by how upset I was for the first few weeks. While combing the web for things on the subject, I ran across this poem. The thought of seeing him again someday did lift my spirits.
Rainbow Bridge Poem
There is a bridge connecting heaven and earth. It is called Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors.
Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills, valleys with lush green grass.
When a beloved pet dies , the pet goes to this special place. There is always food and water and warm spring weather.
The old and frail are young again. Those who are maimed are made whole again.
They play all day with each other. There is only one thing missing.
They are not with their special person who loved them on Earth.
So each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up !
The nose twitches !
The ears are up !
The eyes are staring !
And this one suddenly runs from the group !
You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her into your arms and embrace.
Your face is kissed again and again, and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated
